Master the Messy Bun in 4 Easy Steps
There are few hairstyles quite as stylish and modern as the messy bun. It’s been the style of choice for a certain actress-turned-British royalty thanks to its casually chic aesthetic. A messy bun — or loose bun, for more refined versions like the royal bridal look — is a timeless style. It can be dressed up or down and can be created in a variety of versions that are perfect for almost every occasion. It can, however, be a bit intimidating for the uninitiated. The undone nature of the look requires some pieces of hair to be slightly loose, meaning you need to strike the right balance between hold and flexibility. Fortunately, it’s quite easy to achieve — provided you have the proper tools. Read on for a step-by-step tutorial on achieving this regal ‘do.
The Tools
Nexxus Comb Thru Finishing Mist Hair Spray For Volume, Nexxus Maxximum Finishing Mist For Control, Nexxus Mousse Plus Volumizing Foam, Blowdryer, Flat Iron, Round Brush, Hair Pins. Before getting started, work a golf ball sized amount of Nexxus Mousse Plus Volumizing Foam to the roots of hair to add volume and create the foundation of the bun.
1. Section Off Hair
Section your hair into two parts — one in the front and one in the back. The front section should start at the crown of the head and go from ear to ear. Clip the back section to keep it out of the way as you work.
2. Creating the Messy
Part the front-section hair down the middle to create two sections on each side. Curl each section with a flat iron creating loose curls. Spray curls with Nexxus Refreshing Mist Dry Shampoo to give curls subtle texture so they’re easier to pull back into the bun.
3. Creating the Bun
Unclip the back section of hair and backcomb it at the roots. Roll and twist the hair upwards to create the bun, and pin into place. Spray with Nexxus Comb Thru Volume Finishing Mist for a light hold. Then, take two of the curled pieces of hair from the front section and pull them back, crossing them over top of the bun and then wrapping them around it to create a seamless look. Pin pieces into the bun and spray with Nexxus Comb Thru Volume Finishing Mist for light hold.
4. Finishing Touches
Take the remaining pieces from the front section and pull them back tucking the ends behind the ears and into the bun. These are meant to be loose, so it’s ok if they come out. If you’d prefer to anchor them in place, pin the ends into the bun. There you have it: A messy bun worthy of royalty.
